The sperm whale is not only the largest cetacean, it has the biggest brain of any animal on earth!
Connecticut was a global hub of the commercial whaling industry during the 18th-20th centuries. Whale oil was used as a machine lubricant, fuel for lamps, and in soaps, margarine and explosives. After driving the species to the brink of extinction, the state of Connecticut paid homage to the Sperm Whale by making it the Connecticut State Animal in 1975.
The sperm whale was a popular image in my father’s apparel line Connecticut Shirt Man in the 80-90’s. This print was inspired by a popular style of his featuring a whale painted on a wooden sign. Read more about it here.
